Why I’m Running

Every morning, too many students across our great city wake up cold and hungry, unsure about where they’ll get their next meal. They walk to school, sometimes without a coat or proper clothing, shivering the whole way - partially from the cold, partially from the knowledge that the neighborhood they are walking through may be unsafe for them.

When these students arrive at the door to school, they should walk into a safe, warm place where they feel secure enough to work towards the world-class education they deserve. Sadly, too many students don’t have that experience and too many of our schools don’t measure up. That leaves countless students behind - students with real potential to succeed with just a little help.

I am running because I see myself and my kids in the faces of every one of those students. I am running because when I look at the children of CPS, I see incredible potential that isn’t being achieved.

We owe it to these kids to make it better for them. Every CPS student deserves access to a quality education and the prerequisites to that - safety, nutrition, and mental healthcare.
